Hi, I'm Cameron 'Oak' Akitt.

I have 5 years of ongoing experience in the games industry as an Accessibility Consultant and Accessibility Design Specialist, working with indie and AAA studios, such as Playground Games, Firesprite and Newfangled Games. I combine my project management acumen with industry, and lived experience as a d/Deaf & Hard of Hearing Gamer and developer to support studio’s to make their titles more accessible through in-studio training, reviewing documentation, play testing and participating in, and helping run, user research.

Accessibility Consultancy

I bring together industry experience working with AAA studios and a decade of experience as a SEN Teacher and Teacher of the Deaf to support studios to understand the needs of gamers with disabilities and make their titles more accessible.

User Research

Understanding the needs of your players and how they interact with your designs, systems and mechanics is important. I can assist with your UX user research by helping to run, and analyse the results of, usability testing sessions.

Design Sprints

We all benefit from broadening our perspective and world knowledge. I can support your multidisciplinary teams to understand the needs of gamers with disabilities and develop innovative, accessible, solutions to bridge those gaps.

Professional experience

  • Lead Consultant on the development of new accessibility features including the world first inclusion of signed languages into a AAA game.
  • Debriefing stakeholders at all levels of the organisation using both written reports and presentations with clear, concise and actionable recommendations that also identify areas for further research.
  • Spokesperson for Xbox Games Studios participating in press interviews including written pieces by IGN and Microsoft, phone and full broadcast including on the BBC, Youtube and livestream.
  • Helped conduct usability testing using methodologies including playtests, think aloud protocol, focus groups and retrospective testing.
  • Analysing data from research sessions, identifying key problems along with potential solutions to improve the quality of the game.
  • Lead Consultant on the development new data collection tools that supported the needs of d/Deaf & Hard of Hearing participates.
